Koi are descendants of Carp and are known to have originated from Persia and western Asia. Koi was introduced to Japan through trade.
Breeding of Koi is thought to have started in Japan around the 17th Century. It wasn't until early of the 20th century that Koi left Japan and became popular in europe and other countries including America.
Today, Koi are bred all around the world and have become the most sought after ornamental fish in the world.
